Canine Eyelid Diseases - Animal Eye Care

June 9th, 2009 Posted in 123 Triad

Veterinary ophthalmology is an exciting field. Where else can a veterinarian combine a love of animals, medicine, and surgery, and count among their patients both dogs and cats, but also horses, gorillas, hawks, and other unusual animals with eye problems? Veterinary ophthalmologists actually are trained in Comparative Ophthalmology, and study the eyes of many different species.

Although the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) formed in 1970, references to eye problems in dogs and cattle were described 4000 years ago in ancient Egypt. Eye diseases in the horse were of great interest in the past 2000 years. Examination of the dog eye in the 1800’s led directly to the invention of the ophthalmoscope in 1850, which greatly advanced the diagnosis of both human and animal eye diseases.
